A marijuana shipment estimated to have a street value of $30- $40,000 was confiscated Tuesday afternoon at the Fagatogo Post Office after a young man in his early 20s came by to claim the parcel.

The drugs, according to Samoa News sources, were stashed in four sandwich bags full of protein powder.

Samoa News understands that the young man who picked up the package claimed that the parcel belonged to his brother.

The Customs canine unit has turned over all the evidence and paperwork to the Vice and Narcotics Division of the Department of Public Safety (DPS).

In response to Samoa News inquiries, Chief of Customs Moetulu'i Sipili Fuiava said he has received the report about the findings and a change of custody has been carried out. Now the matter is in the hands of the DPS who will forward a report to the Attorney General's Office.

Moetulu'i confirmed that the package also contained coffee cans, which were purportedly used to try to mask the smell of the drugs from the sniffing canines.

Samoa News understands the young man who picked up the parcel was busted two years ago for the same thing, but criminal charges were never filed.

Samoa News is withholding the name of the suspect until criminal charges, if any, are filed, and the case moves forward to the court system for prosecution.
