Measina a Samoa performs at Pacific Ink & Art Expo Saturday in Honolulu

Representing Samoa and its art of siva, Measina a Samoa, under the direction of Waipahu, Hawai'i-born A'o Siva Moana Sulu'ape, performed at the Pacific Ink & Art Expo Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015. It was the first appearance from the group since the passing of their beloved A'o Siva Lorita “Lika” Achica, of Alamagoto, Samoa and Utulei, Amerika Samoa, mid-June in Hawai’i.

The three-day PIAE that closed Sunday, Aug. 9, brought together tatau, kakau and katao practitioners of Samoa, Hawai'i and the Phillipines, plus tattoo artists from around the Aloha state, the U.S. mainland and the world. Tufuga Ta Tatau Samoa Su'a Sulu'ape Peter, of Faleasi'u and Matafa'a, Falese'ela, Samoa, represented Samoa in the art of tatau.

Each year, Samoa's Sulu'ape Tatau booth is given high prominence at PIAE and made the centerpiece of the Expo. Measina is pictured with dance instructor Moana Sulu'ape after the performance, which the group dedicated to their late A’o Siva “Big Mama Lika” or “Aunty Lika”.

Measina made its debut at the 2014 Teuila Festival in Apia. The ausiva was started by Achica years ago among family, friends and church members at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Waipahu First Samoan Ward.
