Brother, sister and accomplice charged with burglarizing guests at Sadie’s

A brother and sister along with another man are before the court on burglary charges and receiving stolen property in connection with burglarizing the rooms of two guests at Sadie’s by the Sea Hotel earlier this year. Bail for Tahiti Iakopo is set at $15,000 while Joe Pitolau’s bail is set at $30,000, and his sister Mina Pitolau’s bail is $5,000.

Pitolau and Iakopo are charged with first-degree burglary and stealing while Mina is facing one charge of receiving stolen property.

According to the government’s case, on January 23, 2015 police were informed of a burglary at Sadie’s by the Sea Hotel. Senior Police Officer Vasa Wells is lead investigator in this matter.

Court filings say the first victim, an official of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, was trying to place a call, however the call did not go through so he went to the bar to make the call. He returned to his room, locked the door, charged his computer and fell asleep. During the night, he heard a noise but did not get up, however the next morning he noticed his bag was missing and realized the door had been forced open and there were marks on the door.

The missing items included a bag, a Macbook Air computer, an Apple iPad, a Mont Blanc pen, passport, credit cards, cash (in Euro) and USD total value of $1,600, as well as soccer documents, a parent’s watch valued at $8,000 and Bulgari luxury goods valued at $800.

Several days later a woman walked into the police station and filed a complaint regarding another burglary at Sadie’s by the Sea. During the course of the investigation the evidence revealed that the burglaries are connected.

The second victim told the police that he was in his room when he heard his lock being rattled and he saw a young man when he opened the door.

The victim told the suspect that he was in the wrong room. He forced the suspect out and fastened the deadbolt. Investigation led the police to interview Pitolau’s cousin who stated that it was Joe Pitolau who had gone to Sadie’s.

Court filings say that police interviewed Pitolau who stated that he was drinking with Iakopo and they went to Sadie’s to “find beer.”

It’s alleged that when they got to Sadie’s, Iakopo allegedly knocked on guest rooms and then went into one room. The court document says that Pitolau informed the police that he followed Iakopo into the room where they took the MacBook Air, Apple iPad, cash, socks, clothes and flash drives.

Pitolau admitted that he took $500 while Iakopo took $300 and the Euro cash was given to his sister Mina. Pitolau stated that they went on to the next room and took a bag and a pair of shoes while he took $300 and Iakopo took $200.

Several days later the pair allegedly went to Sadie’s and knocked on a guest room door, where they were told to leave and so they went home. Police also spoke to Mina who admitted that she knew that her brother Joe had given her some of the stolen items from the hotel, including $60 USD and $500Euro.

It’s alleged that Mina went to Western Union and exchanged the money, gave some to her husband and bought clothes, food and beer.
