ASPA project updates

The American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA) is carrying out emergency repair work in the sami side area around Matafao Elementary School in Fagaalu.

ASPA Executive Director Utu Abe Malae told Samoa News that “heavy wave action exposed the underground powerlines [Tieline & Feeder 8] and the 20-inch water main.”

He added that “approximately 400ft. along 4-5 different sites were exposed.”

In addition, a power manhole sank about 10-inches from grade level and a quarter of the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority (ASTCA) manhole was washed out due to high surf. Three sites along the ASPA pipes were hanging unsupported.

Utu said the project is expected to extend for another month and if nothing is done to address the problem, “we would lose the water life line that serves the bay area,” and also, “we would lose the Tie Line that links the Tafuna and Satala power plants.”

In other news from ASPA, residents who use debit meters to power their homes are now encouraged to take advantage of ASPA’s online service, which now enables consumers to add credit to their ‘cash power’ from the comfort of their homes.

In addition to convenience, the online service also comes with money-saving benefits, as those who use the service will not have to pay for after hour charges that are imposed when recharging at ASPA’s 24-hour location.

Anyone with internet access will be able to add credit to their ‘cash power’ from anywhere around the territory, anytime during the day or night.
