SPA students donate to Cancer Coalition

The South Pacific Academy’s ‘College Life’ class — which is taught there  in the 9th through 12th grades — requires students to complete a community service project each year. This year the classes conducted several fundraisers, including bake sales, a Pick-a-Thon at Lions Park, food sales at the school canteen, and donation boxes set up at the TMO family of stores.

Donations were received from student supporters in large and small amounts. A few corporate supporters, including TMO, GHC Reid and McConnell Dowell pushed the total amount raised to $2,769.00.

According to Luana Scanlan of the American Samoa Community Cancer Coalition, the students chose the Cancer Coalition to receive this blessing from our community, and because of their kindness, five cancer patients will each receive $500 stipends this week to help alleviate the immense medical costs associated with cancer.

“On behalf of these patients, the Cancer Coalition commends the SPA students for their initiative and hard work.  We thank their teachers, their principal, Tish Peau, and leadership from corporate and individual donors.  We hope that their shining example will lead others to make a difference in our community and in the lives of others by inspiring hope, a work ethic, and generosity,”said Luana.
