As the American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Girls Varsity Basketball season rolls on, only one team remains undefeated, while in ASHSAA Boys Baseball, a new leader takes the top spot.

BASKETBALL

Varsity

In ASHSAA Girls Varsity Basketball, there is no single standout team at this time. However, there are two leaders fighting for control of the lead in the standings.

The Faga’itua Vikings and Tafuna Warriors, who have always had a rivalry, are battling at this time to take control of the Varsity division. They were scheduled to meet for the first time this season today, but ASHSAA made the announcement that the game has been postponed until a later date. However, there will be a game today as the Samoana Sharks will be making a trip to the Malaeloa gymnasium to take on the Fa’asao Marist Cougars in Varsity and Junior Varsity action. The Junior Varsity game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m., with the Varsity game to follow.

With the playoffs a little over a month away, the top four teams at this time are the Vikings, Warriors, Cougars and Sharks. If the rest of the field that includes the Leone Lions, South Pacific Academy Dolphins and Nu’uuli VocTech Wildcats, want to make a run for the playoffs, they have to step up their play right now and start building a momentum for themselves if they wish to reach the top four.

Junior Varsity

In the Junior Varsity Division, the surprise team of the season so far are the Sharks, who went from a dismal winless season last year, to being the leader in the standings at this time with an unblemished record. Right behind the Sharks are the defending ASHSAA JV Champion Cougars also who also posses an undefeated record. These top two teams are scheduled to meet today with the winner taking sole possession of the lead. As for the rest of the teams that include the Warriors, Vikings and Leone, they remain winless, but  still have ample time to make adjustments to catch the leaders.

ASHSAA would like to announce that the girls Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball games that were scheduled for today— Saturday, Mar, 21— have been cancelled.

BASEBALL

In ASHSAA Boys Baseball, there is a new leader at this time. The Warriors have taken the top spot away from powerhouse Fa’asao Marist Crusaders.

The Warriors have not only defeated the Crusaders 7-6 earlier this week, giving the Crusaders their first loss of the season, but they also defeated a very strong Sharks team this past Wednesday by a score of 8-5. The Warriors are now the leaders in the division, knocking the Crusaders down to the #2 spot.

There is still one week of play left as the playoffs are scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 28th. Since there are only four teams playing this season, they will all be included in the playoffs. The only question is, will the Sharks and Lions be stepping up their play to take down the top two leaders, which should still be the Warriors and Crusaders at that time?

Today—Saturday March 21— at the Tony Solaita Baseball Field, there are four scheduled games to take place that will see the Crusaders taking on the Sharks while the Lions will be facing the Warriors. Scheduled starting time is 8:00 a.m.
