Makereta Agatonu nabbed two MVP awards and also scored two goals in helping the Kanana Fou stallions win the ASHSAA Girls Soccer championship 2-1 against the Fa’asao-Cougars. This is the first time the Stallions have won a girls’ high school soccer title.

Agatonu was named MVP of the 2014-2015 girls’ season and also nabbed the Championship Game MVP award after the game on Thursday, March 4, 2015 at Pago Park Soccer Stadium.

“It is a great feeling for us the coaches, players and especially the students and faculty for what our team has achieved in winning the championship,” said Peato Kalio, coach of the Stallions and also Coach of the Year winner for this year’s season.

“I thank Fa’asao-Marist for giving us a great game and I just want to say that in the end it is not about winning but about having the girls from all the schools come out and play and show their talent,” he added.  “If not for FFAS and ASHSAA, these girls would most likely be staying home and not coming out to exercise.  We as coaches and parents want to thank them for hosting this competition and also all the schools that were involved.”

“It is a great pleasure for us to partner with the DOE and ASHSAA in organizing this competition because it targets high school girls,” explained Sandra Fruean, FFAS vice-president and Head of the Women’s Soccer Committee.  “Seven schools competed in this year’s competition and on behalf of our President, executive and association, FFAS will be donating $500.00 to each of these seven schools.”

The announcement was met with thanks from all the schools that received their donations from FFAS.

When these two teams met earlier in the season their game ended in a 2-2 draw.  But with Agatonu firing on all cylinders in the title match, the Stallions were off to a comfortable 2-0 start in the first half.

Agatonu scored on a PK five minutes into the first half and later a through pass saw her speed by Fa’asao-Marist’s defenders before blasting her second goal past the goalie.

The Cougars tried to mount a comeback and missed several shots before getting a PK their way.  Vidya Singh converted the PK and the Cougars late surge fell short of time when referee Lemusa Alatasi whistled the game over.

“After watching Fa’asao-Marist’s games, we decided to change our formation and go with one striker up front instead of two,” Kalio explained.  “This shifted our focus to defending against their very good strikers and we are thankful that it worked yesterday (Thursday) for us.”
