Handball presidents meet in Qatar

The American Samoa Handball Association (ASHA) President Carl Sagapolutele Floor is attending the 24th World Handball Championship in Qatar for the first gathering of International Handball Federation (IHF) National Handball presidents.

“I'm looking forward to seeing the elite level of handball," he told Samoa News via email.  "Recently I sent our Secretary General Valusia Talataina to attend the championships and attend the first meeting of Secretary Generals," he added.

“From what I understand, everyone is excited to meet me due to the awesome results at the IHF Tournament in New Zealand,” he said. Handball has also been implemented into the Department of Education's Physical Education (PE)  programs, where there have been a handful of elementary schools receiving equipment and instruction on how to play the game.

The DOE PE division, along with ASHA, have also been working together in getting the game out into some of the villages.  At the end December, the American Samoa Boys and Girls Under-19 teams competed in the IHF for the Continental Trophy in Wellington, New Zealand. Also at that time, local handball coaches and referees went through certification classes for the overall improvement of the sport in the territory.
