Polynesian seeking another 30-day waiver for Manu’a service

As there is still no U.S. carrier to operate American Samoa’s domestic air service,  Polynesian Airlines has again requested of the U.S. Department of Transportation another 30-day cabotage waiver in order to continue flying between Tutuila and Manu’a.

The Samoa government’s current waiver exemption expires Jan. 30, and the airline— in a Jan. 16 letter—requested cabotage approval through Feb. 28, saying that there is a clear need for continued service for an additional 30 days.

Through its Washington D.C. based law firm, Squire Patton Boggs LLP, Polynesian says it’s the only air carrier able to provide the much needed transportation for Manu’a, thus preventing severe hardship to American Samoa residents.

The letter also states that during November and December last year, Polynesian performed several medical evacuations from the Manu’a Islands and also transported more than one hundred passengers, government employees and engineers between Tutuila and the Manu’a Islands.
