DYWA Sports Commissioner attends Educators Course in France

The American Samoa Government and the Department of Youth and Woman’s Affairs- Sports Commissioner Ethan Lake, recently attended an International Educators Course in Paris, France located at the National Institute of Sports and Physical Education (INSEP), the place where France trains its elite Olympic athletes. It also serves as training ground for other European Olympic athletes.

Lake was invited for an education course along with representatives from 14 countries. According to Lake, this was the first of its kind Educators course, with 15 top tier educators selected to attend, and Lake was among the 15. The sponsorship and funding for the Educators Course was covered by United World Wrestling (UWW) and was presented by the International Rugby Board instructors in coordination with the World Academy of Sports.

“The course was highly focused on developing, training and certifying educators that can in turn deliver Level 1 to Level 3 coaching courses to train and certify coaches in their respective sports fields,” said Lake. “I successfully completed this intensive course with excellent marks and was at the top of my class.”

He stated that at the conclusion of the Educator Course, he took advantage of the opportunity to attend the Advanced Coaches Course for Greco Roman Wrestling, which was also being held at INSEP.

“Both courses were educational, productive and will benefit and help in planning a local Level 1 National Coaches Course,” said Lake. “The course has given me certification to do Level 1 to Level 3 coaching courses. We will be able to certify internationally recognized coaches at different levels. This is not for a particular sport, but generally for all sports.

Coaches obviously know their technique, but it is the overall understanding of how to get that technique across,” explained Lake. Lake, who is also the President of the American Samoa Amateur Wrestling Association, was identified as the UWW Regional Development Officer for all of Oceania, during the week of the Educators Course.

As the new UWW Regional Development Officer for all of Oceania, Lake says this will  give the sport of wrestling here in the territory a big push. “This is really big for American Samoa to be at that level. I can go around and teach coaches starting off at Level 1, but soon it will be Level 2 and Level 3. I will be using some of the tools and methods that I was taught during the course and will apply them here nationally,” explained Lake.

There were participants in the course from France, Germany, Mexico, Egypt, United States, Japan, Great Britain, Portugal, Iran, Romania, Estonia, Zimbabwe and American Samoa.
