College Prep Workshop for Student Athletes planned for end of month

For all of the student athletes here on island, there is something good coming your way in the very near future—a free-College Prep For Athletes Workshop will take place at the end of this month.

The workshop is hosted annually in partnership with the Department of Youth and Women’s Affairs (DYWA), American Samoa Department of Education (ASDOE) Career and Guidance Counseling and the DOE Athletics Office.

The workshop will be taking place on Monday, December 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the DYWA Office at the Executive Office Building in Utulei.  It is open to all student athletes in grades 9-12 wanting to go to college or plan out their future, with a special emphasis on this school year’s graduating student athlete Seniors.

Special guest speaker will be former National Football League player and current DYWA Director Jonathan Fanene. According to the DYWA, topics that will be discussed will be college opportunities, scholarships, financial aid, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college requirements and military education opportunities. Lunch will also be provided.

For more information on the workshop, or to register you can contact the DYWA office at 633-2835, or email them at: americansamoasports@gmail.com.

“This is a great opportunity for any student athlete here on island, especially athletes that are Seniors, to come down and take advantage of this free workshop,” said DYWA and American Samoa Government Sports Commissioner Ethan Lake.

Lake also said that they strongly encourage the parents of the student athletes to attend the workshop with their child so the parent can have a better understanding of the process their child will go through to take advantage of athletic and academic opportunities.

“Do not wait until it's too late. I encourage every parent that has a child that plays sports in high school take advantage of this free workshop. The student athlete can also contact their school counselor as well for information. I know that we have a lot of student athletes here in American Samoa and I hope to see them on December 29 with their parents,” he said.
