MOVIE REVIEW: The Mocking Jay Part 1

“The Mocking Jay Part 1” was, overall, a very satisfying and entertaining first part of the trilogy. The first part is usually always the “build-up” kind; where there seems to be no conclusion, just a cliff-hanger and development into the second part. This seemed to be what was almost perfectly portrayed in this movie. There was a lot of development into tensions between the rebels and the capitol, and the new characters along with old characters in new places. The movie did well in trying to develop everything for the final part.

What I also noticed is that you need to really pay attention and focus on the dialogue and the mood of the characters to actually get the mood they’re trying to set. It’s not really something that’s trying very hard to drag you into the moment unless the moment is really climatic.

There were a few moments that were somewhat climatic but otherwise it takes some concentration to enjoy their mumbled speeches or to get into the mood of crying when Katniss breaks down in tears. I still can’t tell if Jennifer Lawrence is just really good at being emotional or really bad. I feel that her crying is realistic, but for some reason it just brings about a slight snigger when it happens.

The movie had its good moments. As I mentioned before there were those really climatic scenes that had resounding effects on me even though they were expected (because I went for a second viewing). The acting was satisfactory from all of the actors, but I still can’t get over when Katniss breaks down. It is honestly much different than how the other actors do it; which, I guess, is why it shocks me so much.

Overall, the movie is worth watching. Besides there being some scenes where, first watched, it feels like it’s dragging, there are very satisfying conclusions reached in the end.

If you want to know if there is anything at the end of the film, there is. The mocking jay breaks from its enclosing circle, as if liberated; which is what is now expected of the final part of this trilogy.

I hope you will enjoy this well thought-out movie as much as or even more than I did. It is a great start to the end of the “Hunger Games” trilogy.
