Small craft and high surf advisories issued

A trough near the Samoan Islands is enhancing scattered to numerous showers and with the active cyclone season the territory is experiencing, local meteorologist Carol Maafala-Baqui says it is highly possible that the total rainfall for this month will surpass the norm of 14.52 inches. “The weather is expected to look better by Friday night,” she added.

Since Monday, December 1, the total rainfall so far for this month is .03 inches.

Although it may seem like the territory has experienced much more rainfall than that, Maafala-Baqui explained that most of the rain is hitting the mountains, as the tradewinds are pushing the clouds towards mountainous areas.

Last month, the National Weather Station in Tafuna recorded a total of 13.76 inches of rain, which is more than the norm of 11.30 inches for November.

Currently, there is an advisory issued for small crafts and high surf. “This means, everyone should stay out of the water,” Maafala-Baqui stated.

As reported earlier, two to three named tropical cyclones that can reach tropical or hurricane force winds may impact the South Pacific region during this cyclone season, which is November through April. During these next few months, increasing rainfall and developing tropical systems should be expected for the Pacific area, Maafala-Baqui said, adding that based on the current weather conditions, a hurricane is likely for this region.
