High-flying action Saturday at Samoana Gym with Islandwide Volleyball Association

The Islandwide Volleyball Association (IWVBA) Shield League 2012 that takes place every Saturday at Samoana High School, concluded its third Saturday last weekend with more high flying action that saw a new Shielder crowned in the Mens B Division, while in the Women’s Division, Team All 4 One continue to hold the Shield.

The excited fans that packed Samoa High gymnasium witnessed 13 exciting games with some of the best volleyball players on island battling it out in this year’s IWVBA Shield League 2012. The day started in the Women’s Division on Saturday with the BTI Blockarettes winning against the Vatia Girls in two sets, 17-13 and 17-16 to take the match, while the Fiafia Girls took the Matalasi girls to three sets before being defeated. The Matalasi Girls were just too strong in this one as they took the match, 17-13, 9-17 and 8-15.

The current Shield Holder in the Women’s Division, Team All 4 One was challenged by SBC Family for their Shield. SBC Family was easily disposed of, as All 4 One  showed why they deserve to hold the shield in the Women’s Division as they easily took care of business by downing SBC Family 8-17 and 8-17.

In the Men’s B Division, SBC Family had very little trouble defeating Sunset Pride, as they were able to do so in two sets, 17-8 and 17-11 to win the match. Team Peacemaker did not have enough power in this match, as they were defeated by the Sons of Samoa 10-17 and 14-17. Paepaeala was a forfeit winner over Sunset Pride.

In the Shield Game, Tap Dat challenged multiple Shield Holder winner Ave Ma Oe for their Shield. Tap Dat was able to come out strong in the first set and take the lead that they never relinquished and was able to hold on for victory 17-15. In the second set, Ave Ma Oe came out strong and took control at the start of the set but was not able to hold on to the lead and was defeated in the second set as well, giving the match, 17-15 and Shield over to Tap Dat.

In the Men’s A Division, the young team of Manu’atele outlasted 4 Cona to take the match in two sets, 17-15 and 17-15. Kagifa Club was defeated by the Matalasi Boys in a battle that went back and forth for the lead in the first two sets, giving one set each to each team, forcing a third set. The Matalasi Boys were able to take control of the final set to take the win, 17-16, 16-17 and 9-15. IMUA was beaten by the Sons of Samoa in a high flying affair for both teams, 14-17 and 16-17, while Team USO downed the team of Flying Star in another high flying affair, 17-15 and 17-14. The A.T.O. Boys had trouble with Rapanui, but was able to pull out the victory by defeating Rapanui, 13-17, 17-6 and 15-13. In the last game of the day, the Fiafia Boys took the victory over 4 Cona, 17-10, 16-17 and 15-5.

Games are played on Saturday at the Samoana High School gym with a starting time of 9:00 a.m. for the first game with the rest to follow throughout the day. The President of the IWVBA Legae’e ‘Lang’ Mauga wishes to invite the public out to all of the games in this year’s league.
