Samoa's Prime Minister has compared some of the tactics used by Samoa's media to the now-defunct British tabloid, News of the World, in an address to Parliament.At the second reading of his proposed media bill, which would enact a Code of Practice for journalists and establish a Media Council, Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi said money was being used by media organisations in Samoa to collect information.Tuilaepa said the owner of News of the World, Rupert Murdoch, had become a billionaire because of false stories and illegal and corrupt methods to gather information.He told Parliament that similar practices were happening in Samoa's media.The News of the World was shut down in 2011 after it emerged that it had hacked the voicemails of politicians, celebrities and the family of a teenage murder victim.The Samoa Observer reports that Tuilaepa did not refer to any particular media organisation, or give any details about his allegations.
