Biz Beat: Sook’s Sushi now under new management

Ask anyone who has dined at Sook’s Sushi in Fagatogo and they’ll tell you that it was probably the best sashimi and beef kalbi they’ve ever had – at least that’s what the people who talked to Samoa News said.

For 17 years, Mr. and Mrs. Kwan Suk and Sook Ja Kim have offered great food, exceptional service, and a wonderful dining experience for locals and visitors who have had lunch or dinner at Sook’s Sushi. The Japanese restaurant, located on the first floor of the GHC Reid Building in Fagatogo across from the Sadie Thompson Inn, is definitely “American Samoa’s best kept secret”.

Whether it is the spicy fish soup, the fresh sashimi slices, or the shrimp tempura, those who frequent Sook’s Sushi all say the same thing: “there’s just something about being able to watch the chef prepare your food and cook it before your eyes that gives you that sense of comfort.”

Unlike other restaurants, where food is prepared in a closed kitchen setting, Sook’s Sushi features an open concept where the oven, stove, sink, and counter are the first things you see when you walk in. A counter separates the kitchen from the open dining area, with two separate private rooms in the back – perfect for meetings and intimate family get-togethers.

The menu has remained unchanged there for as long as it’s been open, and they’ve never had to. Like the old saying goes: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

It’s the beef kalbi, marinated and cooked to perfection, that has kept people coming all these years. Pair that up with a mouth- watering plate of fresh tuna sashimi, a delicious miso soup and a bowl of kimchi and you’ve got the perfect meal!

There is a large selection of liquor to choose from, and guests have raved about the setting of a restaurant whose décor includes Japanese shades with large glass windows looking out to the Malaloa Marina.

As of October 1, 2014, Mr. and Mrs. Kim have officially retired and their business, Sook’s Sushi, has been sold to Mrs. Xiaoping Wu, the current owner of Fiafia Restaurant in Fagatogo, located on the first floor of the Samoa News Building.

Wu has been in the territory since 2000 and has owned and operated Fiafia Restaurant for five years now. While most people wonder if the menu at Sook’s Sushi will be changed to reflect that of Fiafia Restaurant, Samoa News has been informed that the only thing that has changed at Sook’s Sushi is the management, as the chef, cooks, staff, and especially the menu items will remain the same.

Wu and the gang wish Mr. and Mrs. Kim a happy and safe retirement, and they look forward to maintaining the Sook’s Sushi reputation of being one of the most elegant restaurants on island.

So if you’re looking for a wonderful selection of Chinese, Japanese or Korean dishes, stop by Fiafia Restaurant or Sook’s Sushi today and let Wu and her staff show off their stuff. They guarantee that you’ll leave with a full stomach and a great dining experience that will make you come back for more.
