DRINKING SESSION LANDS TWO IN JAIL

A drinking session landed two people in jail over the weekend over an incident which came to light when police received complaints from a man who was at Sadie’s by the Sea, claiming that Mrs. Maria Sunia was yelling profanities out loud. Police responded to the call and observed Mrs. Sunia throwing beer bottles and cans at the second floor of the hotel.

It’s alleged that female officers tried to apply handcuffs on Sunia but she resisted. After apprehending her, she was placed inside the police vehicle and when officers drove away she kicked one of the officers in the head. According to the government’s case, Sunia continued to use abusive language.

It’s alleged that upon arrival at the police station, Sunia showed signs of shortage of breath, and so Emergency Medical Services was contacted for assistance.

EMS took Sunia to the hospital for a medical checkup given that she’s pregnant and was heavily intoxicated. Court filings say that while at the hospital Sunia tried to escape from police custody by leaving the hospital. Police found her sitting at the hospital bus stop and she was escorted back to the hospital.

A second suspect was also placed in police custody, during the incident. Keleopa Poloa’i was alleged to interfere with police while they were trying to arrest Mrs Sunia.

Poloa’i and Sunia are each charged with public peace disturbance and resisting arrest. In addition, Sunia is charged with third degree assault.

They both made their initial appearances Monday morning, however District Court Judge Pro Temp Fiti Sunia recused himself of this matter as he’s related to the woman’s husband. The pair was taken back to jail and appeared again yesterday morning.

PROPERTY DAMAGE  ARREST

A young man on probation was arrested again on allegations of property damage while intoxicated. Malieo Maui Jr made his initial appearance in the District Court on Monday, where he was represented by Assistant Public Defender Matthew Trick.

According to the government’s case, police officer Maleio Maui Sr. — the defendant’s father — requested police assistance regarding his son who was out of control at their family home in Fogagogo, punching holes into the walls and breaking property within the house.

It’s alleged the defendant went home and while his family was sleeping, started yelling inside the house, and punching holes in the walls. He also broke several fluorescent light bulbs in the kitchen.

Chief of Police Maiava also reported the same disturbance. Police responded to the call and the defendant took off, however upon returning home three hours later, the defendant started punching holes in the walls again, according to the police report.
