Family in Samoa banished after refusal to accept village fine

Puipui Issako is dead against paying a fine of 100 sows to the village of Auala, Savai’i. The penalty is the result of his son, Lauoleola Puipui, cultivating marijuana.Mr. Isaako claims that his wife, Solonaima, brought the matter to his attention after she found their son with a small marijuana plant. They contacted Police and reported their son’s activities.During the village meeting, the Village Council penalised the family, demanding 100 sows. The family refused to pay the fine. They claim that the village already has a regulation in line with anyone caught engaged in criminal activity such as cultivating, smoking or growing it for commercial use is immediately banished from Auala.“This was inappropriate, they should have banished our son and not place a penalty on us since we reported the matter,” Mr. Isaako argued.Following their refusal to pay the penalty, the couple and their other children were banished from the village.Lauoleola appeared in the Supreme Court before his Honour Justice Vui Clarence Nelson yesterday. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was unrepresented. His father, Mr. Issako was also there at the time of the proceedings. He told the Court his family was banished from Auala. He said they reported their son to the Police because they are aware of the village’s hefty penalties against such offending. He also pleaded with the Court for leniency.
