Samoa police inquiry into jailing of a 3-year-old

A police inquiry is underway in Samoa into why a 3-year-old child was locked up with his father in jail.The father was taken into custody for driving an unlicensed vehicle, and his son, who was in the car at the time of arrest, was also taken into police custody.The police professional standards unit is carrying out an investigation into the matter.Samoa's Acting Police Commissioner Misa Tala'imanu Keti's says those responsible will face the consequences.Misa's comments comes after criticism was raised on social media and reports circulated overseas of the child being put in custody with his father.Misa says a public announcement will be made on Wednesday, on the outcome of the inquiry.The father is currently seeking legal advice.Meanwhile a new policy has been put in place as a result of the incident. All divisions have been told to seek approval from Misa before anyone suspected of an offence will be locked in custody.Misa admits the police decision to lock up the 3-year-old child may have breached conventions.
