Friday is deadline to apply for funding through the Public Assistance program

Federal and local government officials say that this coming Friday, Oct. 10, is the deadline to apply for assistance through the Public Assistance program to rebuild public infrastructure damaged in July and August during floods and landslides that were declared a disaster by President Obama.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance program, administered by the states and territories, helps to fund the repair, restoration, reconstruction or replacement of public facilities that were damaged or destroyed by a disaster, according to a joint news release by FEMA and the local Department of Homeland Security.

Eligible applicants include state and local governments, Native American tribes, and certain private nonprofit (PNP) organizations that provide an essential governmental service.

According to federal regulations, the application must be submitted to FEMA within 30 days after the date of declaration. The declaration date for the disaster was Sept. 10, 2014.

All State agencies, special districts and eligible PNPs in American Samoa that sustained costs or damages from the disaster must submit an application to ASDHS for federal-state financial assistance.

The “Request for Public Assistance” (RPA) form should be submitted to: Salu Tuigamala at the Office of Disaster Assistance and Petroleum Management (ODAPM), or call 699-1329 and 699-1330.
