DOA gets the ball rolling on bulb onion project

If everything goes as planned, harvesting bulb onions in the Manu’a Islands will soon become a reality. Nearly two weeks ago, the local Department of Agriculture (DOA) started planting onion seeds and setting up greenhouses in accordance with a request from Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga to DOA Director Lealao Melila Purcell for the planting and development of onions in American Samoa.

The onion project is a collaboration between the DOA and individuals from Apia, Samoa who made contact with Governor Lolo and expressed interest in the project.

In addition to the Manu’a Islands, the different types of onions that are included in the project will also be transplanted to places in Tutuila, including privately owned lands and local farms.
