Cougars down Warriors in three hard-fought sets of Girls Varsity Volleyball

The Fa’asao Marist High School Cougars girls Varsity volleyball team now sits at .500 in the standings so far in this year’s American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Girls Varsity Volleyball season.

This past Tuesday the Cougars made a trip to Tafuna High School to take on the defending Varsity champion Warriors. The Warriors came into the game with a three game winning streak and appeared to be back on track — after dropping their first two games of the season. But on this day, it was not to be for the Warriors, as they were downed by the Cougars in three hard fought sets; 20-25, 25-21 and 21-25. The Cougars and Warriors are now tied in the standings with both holding steady at 3 wins and 3 losses each.

The undefeated Faga’itua Vikings were looking forward to last Monday’s match-up against the high powered Kanana Fou Stallions, but due to an unforeseen transportation  problem for the Stallions, they were not able to make the trip to Faga’itua to face the Vikings. Another team sitting at .500 is the Nu’uuli VocTech Wildcats whose last game was last Saturday when they defeated the Leone Lions. The Lions are still looking for their first win of the season.

There is still hope for one team who is near the bottom of the standings. The Samoana Sharks were winless until last Monday when they defeated the Cougars, putting a check mark in their win column for the first time this season. The Sharks will be meeting the Lions this coming Saturday at Tafuna High School where they will be playing each other twice, with the first game at 8:00 a.m. This will be a chance for the Sharks — who have already proved to themselves on Monday that they can win — to add two more wins to their record. If they can pull this off, or even just take one win on Saturday, they will surely be back in the race.

The Lions on the other hand, cannot drop both of theses games. If they do, they will definitely be in desperation mode. The Lions need to walk away with at least one win Saturday just to flick on the switch to see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, if the Lions, who are playing the Stallions today in Kanana Fou, can pull out the victory, it will definitely take some pressure off of them going into Saturday’s game against the Sharks.

Tomorrow, the Warriors will be taking a trip to the East Side to face the undefeated Vikings, as the Cougars take on the Stallions in Kanana Fou. These games have a scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m.

Along with the two Varsity games this coming Saturday, will be three ASHSAA Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball games, with a scheduled starting time of 9:00 a.m. also at Tafuna High School. The Junior Varsity season that began last Saturday, had the defending champion Vikings coming out strong, winning their first two games of the season. But with the season only in their second week of play, it’s anybody’s ball game. The schedule is subject to change without notice.
