Kanana Fou Stallions remain at the top of Girls Varsity Volleyball

The Stallions Girls Varsity Volleyball team of Kanana Fou High School went into the second week of play this past Monday in this year’s American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) girls varsity volleyball season against the Tafuna Warriors. The Stallions were trying to keep their winning streak alive after starting off the season strong out of the gates.

Making the trip to Tafuna High School, the Stallions came into the game with high hopes going up against the ASHSAA defending champion Warriors, who were still looking for their first win.

The Stallions got the ball rolling by winning the first set 21-25, but it was the Warriors who took the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-18, earning their first victory of the season, sending the Stallions home with their first loss.

The slow start of the Warriors season could play to their advantage, because it appears that they've  worked all of the kinks out of their play, which just might put them back in the win column for the rest of the season. However, with the way the Stallions played the defending champions, they will most likely stay in the top three throughout the regular season.

The only undefeated team at this time in the varsity division are the Faga’itua Vikings who have been steam rolling over their opponents and have not let up since day one. The Samoana Sharks who sputtered all last season and finished last in the standings, have only had one game so fare— which was a loss

(The Sharks played their 2nd game of the season yesterday against the Vikings, Samoa News was not able to retrieve the score as of press time).

The Leone Lions are in the same boat as the Sharks and have also played one game that finished in a loss. But unlike the Sharks, the Lions had an above average season last year, finishing just over .500 in standings, which is giving them some momentum going into this season.

The Nu’uuli VocTech Wildcats and Fa’asao Marist Cougars were matched up yesterday, but unfortunately, Samoa News was unable to get the score of that game before press time.

There are no games slated for today.

The next set of games will be tomorrow when the Sharks meet the Warriors in Tafuna as the Lions travel to the home of the Vikings. On Friday, the Stallions will host the Wildcats, while the Warriors host the Lions. All games have a scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m. with the schedule subject to change without notice.
