Biz Beat: MacDow offering concrete and sealing supplies for every job

Since 1990, McConnell Dowell— known to many as just MacDow—has been serving the territory and people of American Samoa, delivering quality service that is evident almost everywhere on island.

The company is currently working on the long awaited Airport Road Project that is slated to be completed by the mid-January 2015 deadline.

Two weeks ago, Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga praised the company during the official opening of the Leone Bridge saying MacDow “has been with us through a lot, and they are here to stay.” Referring to the new bridge, Lolo said McConnell Dowell has definitely “elevated the standard” as far as quality and he hopes other local contractors will follow suit.

MacDow offices are located next to the SFC Konelio Pele US Army Reserve Center and across from the OMV compound in Tafuna. Their biggest clients are the American Samoa Government and the Army Corps of Engineers.

Other than the Dept. of Public Works, MacDow is the only company on island that has a certified laboratory that can complete all test certification.

Right now, MacDow has for sale concreting and sealing supplies at competitive rates. Their inventory includes certified ready-mix concrete (of all strengths), crushed basecourse, certified asphalt and bitumen treated basecourse, crushed aggregate (1/2 and 3/4-inch clean chips), and screened topsoil.

In addition, MacDow can also fill precast concrete requirements, including power poles, curbs, and fence posts.

The company employees 150 locals, including six women (five in the office and one in the safety department) and about ten from New Zealand. Office Manager Fono Seva’aetasi told Samoa News that one of the company’s main goals is to train local people, and get them up to par so in the future, so residents can sustain the operations themselves and take over all management positions.

Currently, the ball is already rolling, as residents of the territory are already being promoted to supervisory positions, with one heading the work shop, a couple leading the road crew, another one in control of the asphalt plant, and another managing the office.

MacDow has a presence throughout the South Pacific and shows no signs of slowing down in the territory.

Office hours are 6:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., dependent on the workload.  More information on the services they offer can be obtained by calling 699-2239.
