US Treasury Secretary makes brief stop in American Samoa

US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew spent 90 minutes in American Samoa this past Thursday, en route to Australia.

Lew was greeted by Governor Lolo Moliga, First Lady Cynthia Moliga, and Lt. Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga, staff members from the Governor’s Office, Port Administration Director Taemailelagi Dr. Claire Tuia Poumele and Dept. of Commerce Director Keniseli Lafaele.

Samoa News understands that in the brief time Lew was here, Governor Lolo made it a point to express his concerns with transportation issues facing the territory, including the limited number of flights.

Before he departed, Lew was presented with traditional souvenir items including a to’oto’o and fue (staff and fly whisk), tanoa (kava bowl), the American Samoa Centennial Book, and cases of wahoo.

The United States Senate confirmed Lew on February 27, 2013, to serve as the 76th Secretary of the Treasury. He previously served as White House Chief of Staff and held key posts in both the Clinton and Obama administrations.
