Girls Varsity Volleyball opener an upset for defending champions

This year’s 2014-2015 American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Girls Varsity Volleyball champion Tafuna Warriors, got off to a bad start in this year’s season opener this past Monday in front of their home crowd. The East side Faga’itua High School Vikings who were runners up last season to the Warriors, made a trip to Warrior Nation for the season opener on Monday bringing their own fans along with them for support.

Last season, both the Warriors and Vikings dominated the regular season meeting twice with each team trading wins before meeting for the final time in the playoffs where the Warriors were successful in making themselves back to back champions.

If this past Monday’s game is any indication of how the rest of the season is going to be for the Vikings, then the whole varsity division, including the Warriors are going to have their hands full all season. The Vikings came into the season opening game without any vexation and were full of self confidence and assurance as they were able to cruise to a two set victory; 17-15 and 9-25 to start the season off undefeated.

Samoa News was not able to retrieve the scores of yesterday’s games between the Fa’asao Marist Cougars versus the Kanana Fou Stallions and the Nu’uuli VocTech Wildcats going against the Vikings.

Games are played on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The next scheduled games are tomorrow between the Leone Lions versus the Cougars at the Malaeloa gymnasium as the Stallions take on the Samoana Sharks at Kanana Fou.

To close out the first week of play on Friday, the Wildcats play the Warriors with the location to be determined, while the Cougars play the Vikings at the Malaeloa gymnasium. All of the Sharks games will be away games due to their gymnasium being used to house classrooms at this time. All games have a scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m. Schedule is subject to change without notice.
