ASTCA begins free after-school program

If there are parents out there looking for a fun and healthy after-school program for their child, the American Samoa Tennis Association (ASTA) has begun their free after-school program this past Tuesday at the tennis courts next to Lions Park.

ASTA President Billy Young stated that the free program will run throughout the school year and will be held Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It’s for kids from the ages of 5 to 18 years old , and Young wishes to let parents know that if anyone wants to enroll in the free program to call him at 733-4119 for more information.

In the meantime, American Samoa junior tennis players recently returned from Fiji where they competed in the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships (POJC) last month as part of the East Pacific Team competing against the North Pacific and West Pacific teams for the POJC title.

The East Pacific Team comprising junior tennis players from American Samoa, Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga, won the team event, with Tahiti taking the Nations Cup.

ASTA has also announced that they will be having their 2014 American Samoa Tennis Open during Moso’oi week — from October 22 -25.  Any local players who wish to represent American Samoa in the 2015 Pacific Games in tennis,  must play in this tournament to see where they stand. For more information 699-6037, or 733-4119.

“I’m very proud of our junior players— they did a great job at the POJC. I want to thank the parents who helped out and everyone else that had a helping hand during the tournament,” said Young. “My invitation goes out to all parents to bring their child down to our free after school program to learn the game of tennis,” he said.
