FIFA MA Refereeing Course — five days of technical sessions, practical sessions and testing.

“Make the most of your time in this course,” said FIFA/OFC Fitness Instructor Mark Hester during the opening of the FFAS FIFA Member Association Refereeing Course on Monday, August 25, 2014.

“I want to be exhausted when I leave here from all of your questions, presentations and participation,” Hester told the 16 Football Federation American Samoa referees and assistant referees.

“We have this course every year for you referees so that you can maintain or continue to improve yourself as a referee or assistant referee,” said FFAS CEO Tavita Taumua, after officially opening the course on behalf of the president, Fai’ivae Iuli Alex Godinet.

The five-day course has three phases, technical sessions, practical sessions and testing.

They will be tested based on the FIFA Laws of the Game, match analysis tests, offsides and fitness.

“This course is replicated the world over by FIFA,” Hester explained. “The information you will receive this week is the same as that that was given to the recent (FIFA) World Cup referees in Brazil.”

Hester introduced the participants to the course objectives:

•            To Assist referee education at Member Association

•            To increase the quality of the referees

•            To get uniformity in the interpretation and application of the Laws of the Games

•            To share experience and update information

“It is FIFA’s goal that the refereeing be the same no matter the country or level of competition,” Hester pointed out.

Assisting Hester during the course are three FFAS FIFA Referee Instructors — Uinifareti Aliva, Lemusa Alatasi and David Crichton.

“This is a great opportunity for our referees to learn and update their knowledge on the FIFA Laws of the Game,” Faiivae said. “It is not easy to be a referee but I thank our participants for their willingness to come out and help our association.”
