Rainfall for July 2nd most since record keeping began

In July 2014, the territory experienced more rainfall than normal.

The norm for the month of July is 6.3 inches of rain but last month, the number nearly tripled to 18.48 inches, making last month the second wettest July in the history of record keeping in American Samoa.

According to data from Sina Solomona of the National Weather Station in Tafuna, the highest recorded rainfall for July was back in 1962, with 19.59 inches.

The only other July that came close to last month’s number was in 1994 when 15.68 inches of rainfall was recorded.

As of yesterday afternoon, the skies were still dark and rain continued to drizzle, accompanied by strong winds, in the town area.

The weather is expected to start clearing up by today, although the damage has already been done, with one death, dozens of displaced people, and millions of dollars worth of property damage.
