Samoa court orders arrest warrant for mother accused of stringing up her baby

Samoa police are looking for a mother who put her two-year-old baby in a sand bag and strung her up inside their family home in Savai’i.The alleged incident happened after she became upset about the baby crying. The neighbours saw what was happening and contacted the PoliceIn the Supreme Court this week, Chief Justice, His Honour Patu Tiava’asu’e Falefatu Sapolu, issued an arrest warrant for the woman.Charged with grievous bodily harm, she did not appear in Court when her hearing was called on Wednesday.The name of the accused and her village are being withheld to protect the identity of the child.But the Police summary of facts alleged that she put her daughter in a sand bag and strung her up inside their family home.Police Prosecutor, Fetulia’i Laga’aia, had applied for a warrant of arrest.Laga’aia told the Court that the defendant should be issued a warrant of arrest for failing to appear.Chief Justice Patu granted the application.No other details were heard before the Court.Meanwhile, the child is with the Samoa Victims Support Group (S.V.S.G).
