“New Flags Flying” launched in Apia

A book about the history of early political leaders in the Pacific islands was lunched at Letava on Monday night. Titled “New Flags Flying: Pacific Leadership,” the book was written by co-authors, Ian Johnston and Michael Powles.

The book commemorates the leaders of the Pacific, the trials and tribulations they went through in their march to Independence. Mr Powles and Mr Johnstone started working on the book in 1993.

Mr Powles, who is an “adopted son of Samoa,” grew up in Vailima. He says the publication of the book is a great addition to the common knowledge of the Pacific as well as Samoa.

“It would allow them to hear the voices of the forefathers and mothers as they retell their stories of Independence,” he says. “The decision to record these interviews was based on the fact if we’re not careful, we will lose the voices of the leaders who have brought their countries to Independence.” Being the first Pacific nation to gain Independence in 1962, Samoa became the inspiration for other nations to follow.

Mr Powles tells of how other Pacific leaders spoke to the leaders of Samoa for help and advice in gaining their Independence. “So Samoa has played a big part in Independence history in the Pacific by leading the way.”
