Turtle & Shark to be nominated for National Registry of Historic Places

The American Samoa Historic Preservation Office (ASHPO) is working hard to get the Turtle and Shark in Vaitogi nominated for inclusion in the US National Register of Historic Places.

Others already included on the list are the KVZK-TV building in Utulei and one of the guns at Blunts Point in Gataivai.

Being on the National Register of Historic Places, according to Historic Preservation Officer David Herdrich, means something has significance to that location in the state or territory.

Herdrich told Samoa News on Thursday that the project is in its contract phase, meaning a contract will be sent to an off-island company for review.

The off-island company has been contracted to carry out research on the Turtle & Shark.

In other news from ASHPO, Herdrich said their office is working on developing several new projects, some of which include archaeological surveys.
