Fa'asao Marist hosts Spring Art Show and Speech Festival

This past Monday evening, Fa’asao Marist High School (FMHS) held a Spring Art Show and Speech Festival for students in grades 9 through 12 with approximately 70-80 parents in attendance along with friends and families of the students.

According to the program, this was the second year that the FMHS Art Club held an art exhibit which integrated literature. This year's theme was ‘Identify the Artist’ and 19 art club students showcased about 100 separate works of art.

One of the exhibits included Zentangle designs which integrate portraiture and the art of tangling. (A Zentangle is an abstract drawing created using repetitive patterns).

The second half of the evening was a showcase of original poetry inspired by the artwork and a showcase of student performances that had originally been prepared for the island wide Speech Festival which was cancelled by DOE this year.

Performances included, ‘Mother Earth’ by Junior Rexi Pouesi and ‘The Joker' by Junior Pouesi, Rexi Pouesi and Catherine Santotone. The art club students also competed for first place in a contest with the theme, ‘Favorite Song’.

In another competition, groups of contestants had to take the very same box of mystery materials — which included foam boards, string, candles and other miscellaneous items — and create an original artwork.

The winning group created ‘Hot Air Balloon' and three young ladies,  Elyssa, Nicole and Sophia were the winning artists.

Winner of the poetry slam was Gabrielle Langkilde with her poem, ‘Every Artists Dips His Brush in His Own Soul,’ (based on a quote from Henry Ward Beecher).

Facilitating the event were Geraldine Perez and Hamina Mahuka, school faculty members who jointly coordinate the FMHS Art Club.
