Brian Lima tells his side at Apia assault trial

Former Manu Samoa player and coach, Muliagatele Brian Lima, has ended his silence over an allegedly violent incident, which has landed him in the Supreme Court. This happened yesterday when he told Her Honour Justice Ida Malosi he loves his children so dearly that he reacted when someone provoked him by saying they are “none of my business.”Muliagatele was giving evidence during a trial where he is accused of assaulting his former wife, Lemalu Sina Retzlaff, and a friend, Sialofi, outside a nightclub, last December. The former Manu Samoa player and coach has pleaded not guilty to two charges of intent to cause grievous bodily harm, two alternative charges of actual bodily harm, throwing dangerous objects, possession of a dangerous weapon and threatening words. He is represented by lawyers, Ruby Drake and Monique Va’ai. Leone Su’a-Mailo, of the Attorney General’s Office, is the prosecutor.Presiding is Her Honour, Justice Malosi.Muliagatele’s evidence yesterday was the first time the public got to hear his side of the story in what has become the country’s most high-profile assault case.“I wasn’t angry,” he told the Court. “I had no intention to cause any trouble. There wasn’t any intention of being angry.”Muliagatele claimed he was only reacting to provocation from Sialofi.“I reacted to what he said that it is ‘none of my business’ when I asked if he was the one that will take care of my children.” During her cross-examination, Mrs.Su’a-Mailo simply asked if he was angry at Sialofi.“No, I wasn’t angry,” he said.“If you weren’t angry and had no intention to inflict harm, then why did you punch him?” the Prosecutor asked.“Like I said before, I wasn’t angry and had no intention of being angry.“I reacted to what he said when he told me twice – ‘it’s none of my business’ - when my children are dear to me.”
