IA MANUIA LE TAUSAGA FOU! HAUOLI MAKAHIKI HOU! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Friday was the start of the lunar new year for several US Pacific Island indigenous communities. To celebrate this event, the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council is pleased to present the 2014 collection of lunar calendars based on the traditional knowledge and languages of the Chamorro and Refaluwasch of the Mariana Archipelago, Samoans in American Samoa Archipelago and Hawaiians in the Hawaii Archipelago. Each year since 2006, the Council has partnered with communities to produce traditional lunar calendars to promote ecosystem-based management of marine resources, support traditional fishing and management practices, and raise awareness about climate change. Now they are available online.Illustrations in the American Samoa calendar are the winning entries of the student art contest held in the territory on the theme of \Climate Change and Traditional Places: Rights and Responsibilities.\ The calendar also features explanations of each lunar month provided by the American Samoa Community College's Samoan Studies Institute; information on local fish provided by the American Samoa Department of Marine & Wildlife Resources and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council; and monthly proverbs from Samoan Proverbial Expressions - Alaga`upu Fa`a Samoa by Dr. E. Schultz.
