Gov’s office gets first hand update on Tri Marine

Top officials from the Governor’s Office – and possibly Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga himself - have offered to clean the first fish when Tri Marine International officially opens its Samoa Tuna Processors (STP) Inc. tuna cannery plant in Atu’u.

The offer - which may seen a bit comical, but appears to be serious - was personally made by Lt. Gov. Lemanu Peleti Mauga, when he toured the STP facility last Friday for an update on Tri Marine’s multimillion dollar investment in the territory and the challenges faced by the canneries.

Following the tour, Tri Marine officials held a press conference where the company’s chief operations officer, Joe Hamby told reporters late Friday morning that company plans to launch the cannery plant within the next 12 months.

Hamby also says Tri Marine’s CEO and chairman Renato Curto provided an update for Lemanu and other officials from the governor’s office, during a tour of the facility. He says the governor’s delegation was pleased with what they saw and “they’ve offered to help us clean the first fish, that we’re going to produce.”

“So that’s going to be an exciting moment, for American Samoa to have the governor’s top people, including the lieutenant governor,” clean the first fish, he said and Curto quickly added, “maybe including the governor” who was off island last Friday morning during the tour of the facility.

Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga had said publicly that when his family moved from the Manu’a island group to Tutuila, his mother worked for many years at the canneries to put food on the table and put him and his siblings through school.
