Tafuna sophomore to represent territory at National Science Symposium in D.C.

Charu Joserose, a 10th grader at, Tafuna High School, placed fourth at this month’s Pacific Symposium for Science and Sustainability (PS3) in Honolulu and was selected to participate in the National Science Symposium in Washington DC.

 

Other local students who took part in the competition are: Tiara Drabble (SPA) honorable mention, Taylor Jessop (SPA) honorable mention, Jaeleen Ozu (THS), Koroseta Butler (SPA) and Liana Gurr (THS) honorable mention,

 

The national symposium takes place April 23-27, 2014 and all invited students receive an expense paid trip to the competition, where over 400 students will orally present their scientific or engineering research to a panel of judges. Winning finalists move on to represent the United States at the London International Youth Science Forum.

 

Tafuna principal Beauty Tuiasosopo told Samoa News she is very proud and happy about the accomplishments of her students and congratulated the Tafuna participants and their science teacher and mentor, Dr. Rose on behalf of the faculty and parents.

 

She also made note that this special program is organized by DOE’s OCI division with support from DOE Director Vaitinasa Salu Hunkin Finau.

 

The PS3 is a regional competition open to all high school students in Hawai‘i and the Pacific Region. This year’s competition involved more than 50 students from Oahu, Maui, and Hawai‘i Island, as well as Micronesia and American Samoa.

 

The competition is organized and hosted by the Hawai‘i Academy of Science (HAS), a private non- profit organization dedicated to promote scientific research and education in Hawai‘i and the Pacific Rim. The program is sponsored through a grant that brings high school students together for a weekend of science related activities and social events, which includes the all- day competition at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.
