8-year old girl dies in Samoa, relative accused

An eight-year-old girl has died after a relative reportedly threw a kettle of boiling hot water on her legs.The incident occurred at Puipa’a on 4 January 2014.Assistant Police Commissioner, Fauono Talalelei Tapu told the Samoa Observer yesterday that charges are yet to be laid against a 23-year-old man alleged to have been responsible for what happened.“The cousin is said to suffer from mental difficulties and has special needs,” he said.Fauono said Police are awaiting a psychiatrist to determine this.Meanwhile, he said the “matter was only reported to Police a day before the girl was expected to be buried.”He said after the alleged incident, the girl was not taken to hospital for treatment immediately.Instead, they sought traditional means of treating the girl’s burns, he said.“The treatment was coconut oil and bamboo,” said the Assistant Police Commissioner.Police suspect that the wounds were infected, resulting in her death.
