Samo cop outraged by investigation & alleges cover up attempt

The Senior Corporal and four police officers who pulled over Associate Minister Muagututagata Peter Ah Him on Main Beach Road and attempted to breath test him for suspected drunkenness, are under investigation by the Police Professional Standard Unit (PPSU) over the incident.

And Senior Corporal Ma’anaima Patu has accused a superior of a cover up to protect the two politicians.

“This is outrageous, we have been investigated for doing our job when they (PPSU) should direct their investigation at the cover up,” he said.

Police media officer, Assistant Commissioner Fauono Tala Tapu confirmed the five officers are under investigation by PPSU.

The investigation includes the officers’ conduct on the night in question and a report of the incident written by one of the officers, Ioapo Isitolo, Assistant Commissioner Fauono said.

Asked why such an investigation has been carried out, he said, it was procedure. Asked if any charges would be filed against the Deputy Prime Minister and Associate Minister, he said it depends on the outcome of the investigation.

Earlier in the month, Assistant Commissioner Fauono said charges should have been laid against the two politicians. Fonotoe had interfered with Police work, he said.

Head of Police at the time, Acting Commissioner of Police Afamasaga Michael Soonalole was responsible for making the decision to lay charges, he said.
