VIDEO: ASHSAA FOOTBALL WEEK 8 CONCLUDES, PLAY-OFFS COMING UP

This past weekend marked the eighth week of American Samoa High School Athletics Association football action for the school year 2013-14, as we are nearing the play-offs and finals coming up fast in a couple of weeks.

As of now, Tafuna High School’s Varsity team remains the powerhouse of their division — the only undefeated team — with a 60 plus point in a row of  winning victories every weekend.

In the Junior Varsity Division, the Leone Lions still rule the pride, as they continue to be undefeated.

ASHSAA 2013 football highlights are brought to you by GHC Reid and Co. Ltd, Oloa o Leala, exclusive distributors of Coca Cola and Powerade — your family of fine beverages.

Video clips of highlights of the games can be viewed on YouTube, samoanews.com, and facebook.com on the SamoanewsAmericanSamoa page.

The continuation of ASHSAA sporting events has prompted a change in the football season schedule, as JV games are now held on Thursday and Friday; and all three Varsity matches are scheduled to be played on Saturday.

WEEKEND GAMES

Varsity

The Tafuna Warriors remain at the top of the Varsity Division after a dominating victory over the Wildcats in the opening game for Saturday’s triple header with a 66 - 0 victory, the same score they beat Fagaitua Vikings with in the second week of ASHSAA Football, so this isn’t really a bad loss for the Wildcats, as they held their ground to the end of the fight.

The second game was between the Samoana Sharks _and the Kanana Fou Stallions; and it was a tough one, considering the harsh winds and continuous rain. But it never stopped these two teams from performing. The Stallions certainly showed up to play, despite having only 20 players on their sideline last Saturday, as well as getting help from an eighth grader, who is also playing in the varsity division for the Stallions. In the end, however, the Sharks showed that water is their arena and swam home with a 30 - 0 victory played at full-time.

The final game of Saturday was considered the toughest of them all, when the Lions had a hard time against the Crusaders who tied them into half time of the match. The only touchdown for the Crusaders came in the hands of a linemen, center offensive lineman Christopher Manila, who stripped the ball out of the hands of a Leone defender and took it to the end zone. But, the Lions still won the ball game after Marist failed to correct mishap’s that cost them a two-point loss on a safety.

Junior Varsity

The JV Division also had some interesting games on Thursday and Friday, as the Warriors managed to save themselves against the Fagaitua Vikings last Thursday. Fagaitua led throughout the  game until Head Coach Kolose Ili managed to spice things up for the Warriors to come back and win a 32 - 28 game, with just seconds remaining on the clock.

Leone Lions defeated Samoana Sharks and is still the only undefeated team in the JV Division, with Jeremiah Pritchard and Aleipata Fereti leading the way for them this weekend.

Samoa News saw Lion’s Folasa Vili hardly get any field time, except for kicking off the ball and was on the sidelines throughout the whole game. Despite his absence, this never stopped the Lions from going all the way and winning big against the Sharks — 46-0.

VARSITY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Samoa News has selected “Frank Mauigoa” (#8 Quarterback) of the Warriors to be this week’s Varsity Player of the Week. Mauigoa is only a Junior and is the leading quarterback in the league in touchdown passes and completed passes alone. He lead the Warriors to a 66 - 0 win against the Nu’uuli Wildcats on Saturday.

JUNIOR VARSITY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Samoa News has selected “Jeremiah Pritchard” (#2 LB/WR/RB/QB) of the Lions as this week’s Junior Varsity Player of the Week, after leading his team to not only shut out the Sharks last weekend, but to win with no doubt in anyone’s mind: Pritchard took two touchdown conversions to the end zone, and had a load of tackles and sacks on defense.

PLAY OF THE WEEK

The Play of the Week can be viewed on our Samoa News Facebook or Youtube site, and is awarded to the Marist Crusaders’ Christopher Manila (offensive lineman), who scored the only touchdown for the Crusaders that tied their football game last Saturday.
