Baha’i community mourns loss of pioneer

A long time dedicated international pioneer for the Baha’i Faith passed away peacefully last Friday afternoon, after battling with cancer for the last six years. Mrs Jane Caulfield Hyman of Vaitogi, first came to Samoa from California with her husband Bill in 1972. They spent the first two of years in Apia, teaching and proclaiming the Baha’i Faith before moving to American Samoa in 1974.

A message from the Baha’i Faith International Governing Body, known as the Universal House of Justice in Haifa-Israel, states, “We are saddened to learn of the passing of devoted handmaiden of the Blessed Beauty Jane Hyman. Her many years of humble, consecrated service to the Cause, distinguished by her constant expression of loving support toward others and by her having served as an international pioneer for over four decades and as a member of the Auxiliary Board for Protection, will long be remembered.”

According to one of the members of the Baha’i Faith, “As we are saddened by the loss of this stalwart member of our community, we can take comfort knowing that the Concourse on high welcomes her with ‘flying flags and the beat of drums’. Our dear Jane lived a life that inspires even those that barely knew her – so much more for those who worked along side her, loved her deeply and cherished her friendship.”

In addition to serving humanity through the work of the Baha’i Faith, Jane was also an active member of the business community, serving on the board of the Business and Professional Women of American Samoa for many years. She is survived by her husband Bill and her two sons Leonard and Ashton. Her funeral service is today, September 25  at the Tafuna Baha’i Center in Ottoville, to be followed by her burial at the Hyman residence in Vaitogi.
