TWO STEPUP STUDENTS AMONG THOSE REPRESENTING TERRITORY AT NIH

Soon to be seniors at Leone High School, Leuatea Faiai and Mika Aga proudly wear their ie faitaga as representatives of American Samoa at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

 

Faiai presented his study on native birds and Aga on the molecular characterization of taro. Leuatea is the son of Sosene and Annette Faiai and Mika is the son of Dan and Alesi Aga.

 

The two were sponsored by the STEPUP program, now in its 5th year in American Samoa. STEPUP trains high school students to become researchers in the sciences.

 

ts coordinators are Netini Sene, of DOE and Dr. Mark Schmaedick of ASCC Land Grant. Other student researchers were Tulimalefo’i Mauga, Jaeleen Ozu, Jesse Scanlan, and Akash Sivakumar.
