WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DUST GENERATED BY AIRPORT ROAD PROJECT?

While reconstruction of the airport road project is stalled due to the lack of bond for contractor Whitehorn Construction, families living close to the road, across the street from Coco Mart, are daily faced with what they say is a serious health issue —“dust” coming from the portion of the road covered with cinder and not yet paved.

A member of one family in this area told Samoa News that they don’t know who to contact for help.

By 3p.m. yesterday, a member of one of the families was seen using their own family garden hose and water to wet down the area to prevent dust from reaching nearby homes, whose residents include senior citizens.

Contacted by phone yesterday afternoon, Rep. Larry Sanitoa — who has been working with Department of Public Works to address pot holes on the airport road and other roads in Tualauta county — said he has also received messages of concern from this same area of the airport road about the dust, especially during sunny days — like yesterday.

Sanitoa says he was in the process of contacting DPW and others for help and he apologized to residents affected by the dust.

Samoa News understands that DPW does not have the proper equipment to spray water on such areas, while Whitehorn had used their equipment to spray water in the areas over the months when there was a lot of dust on the unpaved portions of the road.

However, now that a stop order on the road project has been issued, no one is watering down the area.
