Samoan author fulfills dream, one book at a time

Before she even understood what it meant, Fa’alologo Filloon always knew that writing was her calling. Filloon, known simply as Logo to those who know her, is the author of the Velesi Trilogy.

In an interview with Samoa News from her home in Las Vegas, Nevada, Logo said, “Writing has always been a part of me. Whether it was the writing of others whose books helped me escape during my childhood, or my own writings that became a source of expression at an early age.”

Logo has written hundreds of stories since she was a teenager. But it wasn’t until 2011 that she decided to get published. She is a Samoan woman who truly serves as an inspiration to aspiring local writers.

Logo is the biological daughter of Aveolela Tuiteleleapaga, granddaughter of the late Napoleon Tuiteleleapaga. But she was raised and adopted at birth by Lemanu’a Maselino Iuli Teofilo of Leone and Fa’alologo Sapa’u Lemanu’a Teofilo of Saleimoa, Samoa. She has three sisters and two brothers, none of who are writers.

Logo recalls growing up with a stay-at-home mom and a father who was a construction worker who, after falling and injuring his back, ended up carrying out odd jobs to support their family.

“My father relocated us to Hawaii in 1968 when I was six years old,” Logo recalled. They lived in Waipahu and then Waianae near Nanakuli before they moved to San Diego, California in the summer of 1975.

When asked if she remembered her childhood years in Leone, Logo responded, “I was very young when we left, so my memories of Samoa are flashes of reflections.” She remembers her mother’s flower garden - “random, full of colors, wild…just beautiful.” She also remembers the large rock pool that they bathed in and the huge water barrel that captured rainwater, as well as her brother taking her for a ride around their property on their horse (and her colt).

Logo’s flashbacks also include the big avocado tree outside their house and the chickens and dogs that used to roam around their property. “I remember green everything…. it was very fresh, very beautiful. The storms kept us inside, huddled together and feeling safe.”

But what she remembers most is the memory of her mother giving her a piggyback ride from their main house to a small, open fale uphill when she got sick.

“I don’t remember why being there would make a difference in my healing,” Logo said. “There is much I remember and yet, they are only a moment of what would have been a lifetime. Very young memories, viewed through the eyes of a six-year-old child.”

Forty-five years later, Logo is yet to return to Tutuila. She and her youngest sister have not set foot on the island since they left as children, although her older sister has made trips here several times.

When asked if she planned on ever returning to her birthplace, Logo replied, “I do, very much.” She added, “I want to visit our home and see if it is the same as my childhood memories.”

Logo has one child, a daughter named Afatia (Tia) Christina Filloon Sifford, whom she named after her sisters. “She is my inspiration, my heart, and my unconditional love” Logo said of her daughter. “The very second I heard her cry, I knew what my destiny was… to be a mother, teacher, and protector of this amazing person and her journey through life. We all deserve a true blessing in our lives — she just happens to be mine.”

Logo said she would like to have her daughter and her husband accompany her on a trip back home.

Logo said Afatia has never been to American Samoa and “I know she wants to see the land of her forefathers and connect with her Samoan roots.”

Logo was once married (to Afatia’s father) but she says she feels blessed to now be in a relationship that is loving, caring, and healthy. Logo has been with her new mate for over eighteen years although they never married. “We all strive to be happy; and to be with someone who makes you happy is to be truly blessed.”

According to her profile on Amazon.com, Logo started writing during her junior high school years, and it wasn’t until late 2011 that she self-published her first book: The Binding — the first in the Velesi Trilogy. She followed up the next year in 2012 with Book 2: The Drifting. The final installment of the trilogy: The Whispering will be released on July 27 and will be available on Amazon.com for Kindle.

The Binding was just released in Italian this past week. The Velesi trilogy, in a nutshell, is a simple love story with a twist—as there are elves.

According to Logo, the story is very character driven. The adventure begins when Lily (the main female character) is attacked by her brother who had been missing for over four years. Lily is rescued by Tharin Lunar (an elf prince and the main male character). He and his twin brother, Tolan, tell Lily that she is actually the daughter of a Sidhe Queen and that she and Tharin are betrothed, based on a treaty between their families. It is Tharin’s job to get Lily back to his realm (Velesi), marry her, prevent war among the clans, and save the realm from destruction by a demon master name Eathos

Lily does not go alone. Instead, she takes her best friend Julia with her. As for Tharin, he is accompanied by Tolan, and their three bodyguard cousins: Alorn, Phoris, and Mellis.

Completion of the Velesi Trilogy, Logo says, has given her the opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming a full time writer. She is retiring this year and says she is excited about what’s in store for her, now that the trilogy is done. “I feel very blessed and grateful for my God-given talent and for the opportunity to write the stories that I want to share with others,” she said through via email yesterday.

Logo says she has the most awesome fans from all over the world but added that very few are from the islands. She says she has a fan club in India, with high volume sales in the UK, Germany, Canada, the Philippines and France. She reports sales in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Austria, Brazil, Italy, and New Mexico, but a large percentage of her followers (about 89%) are from the United States.

“It is my wish to someday head a foundation for Samoan youth who aspire to be great authors, to connect and start a network with other programs and foundations that exist to mentor and inspire greatness for our youths,” Logo concluded.

For now, Logo will be doing what she loves the most: writing, writing, and more writing.
