Chamber supports new task force on port/airport fees and charges

The local Chamber of Commerce board says it is pleased with Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga’s decision to set up a Task Force to review the present rates charged for port and airport services and facilities.

“This is another example of the Administration pushing the implementation of its economic development agenda, and taking into consideration the needs of the private sector,” the board said in a brief statement yesterday responding to Samoa News request for comments.

“As with all these new initiatives the Chamber stands ready to provide any assistance to the Task Force that might make a positive contribution to its findings and recommendations,” it says.

In the July 15th memorandum establishing the task force, the governor advised the group for the private sector to be fully engaged in their work to ensure that the recommended new rates will "not undermine efforts to advance our economic development goals.”

The task force’s primary purpose is to review existing rates and fees for port and airport services and facilities and to recommend new rates, if they are warranted, based on criteria established by the task force.
