Sanctuary establishes tourism-recreation working group

The National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa's (NMSAS) Sanctuary Advisory Council(SAC) has established a Tourism & Recreation Working Group, with its first public meeting set for next week.

Sanctuary officials say the working group is to provide a forum to develop and guide eco-place opportunities and programs at some of the sanctuary sites.

Among the goals and objectives of the working group are to provide new and expanded information on tourism-based economic opportunities for villagers and provide them with assistance and advice on how to increase viability, sustainability and growth of eco-tourism businesses and services, according to the NMSAS information sheet.

Additionally, they hope to develop recreational programs that embody the mission of the National Marine Sanctuaries and help build cooperative partnership programs with the public sector, private sector, and the NMSAS.

The Tourism & Recreation Working Group will be conducting its first meeting on June 24 from 2pm-3pm at the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center.
