Samoa's EFKS to build loan office, then bank

The biggest Christian denomination in Samoa – the Congregational Christian Church, also known as the EFFKS – plans to establish a loan firm, then eventually, a commercial bank. This was one of the main issues discussed in the recent annual conference at Malua.According to General Secretary, Reverend Dr Iutisone Salevao, the proposed bank will be funded from the church’s To’omaga Fund.“The fund is close to ten million tala at the moment and we are looking to allocate anywhere between two and five million tala to the proposed venture.“But it’s a long term project and we are looking at four years before any bank becomes fully operational. We want to establish the loan scheme first. Basically the venture is to serve the members of the Church. Eventually, the Church members can loan or save or invest their money in the bank we are envisioning right now. In the short term, we also don’t plan on opening any banking or loan service out to the general public.”According to Rev Dr Salevao, the proposed bank – or loan firm, or whatever comes first – will be located at the John Williams building, Tamaligi.
