Ground broken for new island resort in Samoa’s capital

Construction has begun for a new high-end resort on a man-made island near Samoa’s capital. The Papua New Guinea company Lamana Development has broken ground for its 60 million US dollar resort on Taumeasina Island near Apia. The Commerical Manager, Simon Brendling, says all the 80 rooms and 25 villas will be low-rise, and the resort will feature a beach, wedding chapel and conference facilities. He says the expected opening date is early 2016, and in the meantime a marketing roadshow will get underway. “We’re hoping that giving Samoa a world-class hotel facility can attract more tourists to Samoa. Part of our strategy is also targeting the overseas Samoan community. Obviously in New Zealand as you know there’s a big community there as well as in Sydney and in LA, so we are targeting these second and third generation Samoans who come back for holidays.”Simon Brendling says the company also operates the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara, Solomon Islands and is renovating the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Fiji.
