6th Annual American Samoa Goodwill Mission group arriving Thursday night

The Sixth Annual American Samoa Goodwill mission (June 13-17), sponsored by the June Jones Foundation, will be arriving on island this week with 29 traveling doctors, nurses, coaches and former National Football League (NFL) players.

 

According to Samoa Bowl Chairman Leala Melila Purcell, the June Jones Foundation will be presenting five $2,000 scholarships to selected scholar athletes this coming Friday, June 14, at the governor’s conference room. The scholarships are to student-athletes on island, who graduated this year and will be looking to head out to college, not only to further their athletic knowledge, but to further their education as well.

 

He also stated that there will be “medical training” for coaches and anyone interested taking place at the Department of Agriculture conference room during the visit of the mission. Medical training will specifically focus on taping of sprains and injuries, usually a result of sports activities.

 

The group’s schedule is set as follows:

 

Friday night’s dinner will be hosted by First Lady Cynthia M. Moliga and Lieutenant Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga.

 

The next day, Saturday, is the day for the football combine for all Junior Varsity and Varsity football players at the Veterans Memorial Stadium. A  Saturday night dinner will follow later, hosted by Mrs. Pat Letuli and family.

 

On Sunday, according to _Leala, the visiting group will attend the Manumalo Baptist Church.

 

On Monday, the group will visit the Boys and Girls Club to make a donation; and they will also be making a donation to the Fatu-O-Aiga Hope House and the LBJ Medical Center before departing the territory that same Monday night.

 

According to the June Jones Foundation website, www.junejonesfoundation.org, the Sixth Annual American Samoa Goodwill mission is led by Southern Methodist University Head Football Coach June Jones and several former NFL players, including Philadelphia Eagles Running Back Reno Mahe, San Francisco 49ers legend Jesse Sapolu (four-time Super Bowl Champion), Denver Broncos Defensive End Ma’a Tanuvasa (two-time Super Bowl Champion) and more.

 

The website also states that the Goodwill Mission provides free medical care and supplies, athletic equipment and student fitness programs for the people of American Samoa.

 

The Sixth Annual American Samoa Goodwill Mission Medical Team will be led by Dr. Francisco Garcia, Laurie Rivera, Johnny Tapusoa, Kelli Te’o and David Te’o.
