ASHSAA Girls Basketball: undefeated Warriors to meet Lions twice for championship

In the latest news of the American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Girls Basketball season, the Tafuna Warriors Varsity team has been lighting up the courts since the beginning of the season and have stormed out to an undefeated season so far with a perfect 8-0 record and there are only two games left to play.

They will both be against the Leone Lions who boast a 7-1 record. These two top teams will meet today at Leone and on this coming Monday, also at Leone. The Monday game will be a make up game that was supposed to be played on April 19.

The Lions have to win both of these games to surpass the Warriors in the standings to finish out the season with the best record for the championship title. Due to no playoffs in this year’s Varsity season, it will be conducted the same as the Junior Varsity set up — where the team with the best record at the end of the season will take the championship title.

If the Lions drop just one of these games, the Warriors will take the championship, so it's a must-win situation for the Lions in both games.

The only loss for the Lions came at the hands of the defending ASHSAA Varsity Champion Samoana Sharks back on April 10 in Leone when the Sharks defeated the Lions by a score of 46-41. The Sharks, however have no chance at keeping the title due to the new format implemented into the Varsity system this season. They finished with a record of 7-3, which is mathematically impossible for them to come out on top, no matter how the Warriors and Lions games turnout.

For the rest of the field, it’s unclear at this time if the Faga’itua Vikings (3-6), Fa’asao Marist Cougars (1-8) and Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats (0-8) will be finishing out their season. Samoa News will keep you informed if and when these three teams finish out their season.

JUNIOR VARSITY

In the Junior Varsity standings, the top two teams at this time are the Sharks (7-1) and the Warriors (5-2). The Junior Varsity Sharks, like their Varsity sister Sharks, are also the defending ASHSAA Champions.

But unlike their Varsity sisters, they have a real good shot at defending their championship title. The only loss for the Sharks came when they were defeated by the Lions (5-2) on April 10 in Leone by a score of  23-16. The only two losses for the Warriors were against the Sharks.

The Vikings (2-6) could only walk away with two wins thus far as the Wildcats (0-8) never got out of the starting gate and have been blown out in every game. Similar to their varsity sisters, the Wildcats have averaged under ten points a game since the beginning of the season.
